Choosing Lighting For Task And Living Areas – Tech, Business, News ...

Lighting is the most important part of home decor. Lights are the mood setters. The entire look and the feel of a room is dependent on the lighting style.

The lighting needs changes with different rooms. For example, task areas like kitchen, bathroom, home office etc. will have different lighting styles than living rooms which include bedrooms, family rooms etc.

Choosing proper lighting for task areas is sometimes easier than choosing for the living areas. The task areas are frequently used, but they aren’t usually a place where people spend most of their free time, so mood isn’t quite a large factor.

To light up task areas, ambient lighting is mostly used as the main lighting source. It gives a beautiful look to the room and is functional at the same time. Then comes task lights for these rooms. These are used in areas where a particular task is performed like in a kitchen over the sink or counter top or over a bathroom mirror.

After ambient and task lighting, you can think about accent lights with which you can highlight some special features of the room like any wood work or a painting etc.

When deciding on lighting for the living areas you will want to work in the opposite direction. For example, in task areas you choose ambient, task, and then accent lighting. For living areas you use accent, task, and then ambient.

You can highlight parts of the room that you want to show off using accent lighting like any artwork, points of interest, a beautiful display, etc. After deciding on your highlights you will want to get task lighting for the areas that will need extra light. This may include a reading area, game table, etc. Ambient lighting is used where extra light is needed.

Lighting is the most important part of home decor. Even if you have rest of the things right and the lighting arrangements are not good, all your efforts would be wasted. After deciding on the lighting styles, get some matching fixtures to complete the look of your home.

Take week to spice up decor

When you entertain, you probably give lots of thought to the menu, perhaps gathering and trying recipes weeks in advance. You shop and cook and bake and fuss over the food until it's perfect.

But what about the house itself? Do you give the same attention to your décor?

"Most people wouldn't dream of wearing tattered clothes from yesteryear, yet they hang on to a chair that's seen better days," says Jill Vegas, author of the new book "Speed Decorating: A Pro Stager's Tips and Trade Secrets for a Fabulous Home in a Week or Less" (Taunton Press, 2009, $21.95). "They simply forget to take a fresh look at their home and see what needs to change."

With the holidays approaching, this is a good time to step back with an objective eye to see what can be done to create a more welcoming and less humdrum environment - for guests, for your family and for yourself.

There's plenty of time to create new interior spaces, according to Vegas. Her book, in fact, provides step-by-step instructions on how to make significant changes to a room in a few hours, a few days or a week, which is what speed decorating is all about.
